
EAST GREENBUSH — A police officer died in an accident Sunday afternoon in
Petersburgh after he lost control of his motorcycle on Route 2.
Ed Witko
was killed while participating in a charity motorcycle run for combat veterans,
said Town Supervisor Richard McCabe, who added that the investigation is
ongoing.
“It’s very tragic,” McCabe said. “He’s one of our most beloved
officers.”
Investigators said that Witko lost control of his motorcycle,
crossing into a lane of oncoming traffic when he was hit head-on by a car. Witko
was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver and passenger of the car were taken
to Albany Medical Center with non-life threatening injuries.
McCabe said
that Witko was a student of his when he taught at Rensselaer High School, and
Witko had been on the town’s police force for seven or eight years.
“It’s
a very sad scenario,” he added.
East Greenbush Police Sgt. Mike Cando
said officers were still on the scene, though State Police are handling the
initial investigation.

January 20, 2010 - Morris, NY -
On January 20, 2010, at
approximately 2:50 p.m., the New York State Police responded to a
fatal motor vehicle accident which occurred on State Route 23 in the
Town of Morris, (Otsego County), New York.
Preliminary
investigation at the scene revealed that Trooper Jill E. Mattice, age 31,
assigned to SP Oneonta, was travelling eastbound on State Route 23 when she
became involved in a collision with a westbound tractor trailer being operated
by F.M. Saggese, age 33, of West Oneonta, New
York.
Trooper Mattice was pronounced deceased at the scene.
Trooper Mattice was a 6˝ year veteran of the New York State
Police. Trooper Mattice was last stationed at SP Oneonta where she
was assigned as the School Resource Officer for the Unadilla Valley
Central School and Franklin School Districts.
Trooper Mattice is the first female Trooper in the New York State Police to die in the line of duty.
DECEMBER 31ST 2009 - NORTH GREENBUSH — A man robbed the
Trustco Bank branch on Main Avenue Thursday afternoon in Wynantskill’s second
bank robbery in less than a month.
A white man wearing a mask made off
with an unknown amount of money from the bank, located at 134 Main Ave.,
according to authorities. He ditched some clothing, including the mask, at a gas
station and took off into the woods, authorities said.
A helicopter was
seen flying over the area in an attempt to locate the suspect, who did not
display a weapon during the robbery.
On Dec. 7, a masked man robbed the
First Niagara branch down the road from the site of Thursday’s robbery and
similarly fled into the woods, shedding his clothing as he went. The man, who
made off with $5,000 tainted with a dye pack, was described as a white male
roughly six feet tall.
DECEMBER 7TH 2009 - NORTH GREENBUSH, N.Y. -- North Greenbush
police are looking for the man who robbed the First Niagara Bank on Main Avenue.
It happened around 1 p.m. Monday.
The suspect was wearing a mask and blue jeans and got away on foot.
Investigators tell us no weapon was displayed.
Helicopters and K-9 units
assisted in the search for the suspect.
