EAST GREENBUSH — A police officer died in an accident Sunday afternoon in Petersburgh after he lost control of his motorcycle on Route 2.

Ed Witko was killed while participating in a charity motorcycle run for combat veterans, said Town Supervisor Richard McCabe, who added that the investigation is ongoing.

“It’s very tragic,” McCabe said. “He’s one of our most beloved officers.”

Investigators said that Witko lost control of his motorcycle, crossing into a lane of oncoming traffic when he was hit head-on by a car. Witko was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver and passenger of the car were taken to Albany Medical Center with non-life threatening injuries.

McCabe said that Witko was a student of his when he taught at Rensselaer High School, and Witko had been on the town’s police force for seven or eight years.

“It’s a very sad scenario,” he added.

East Greenbush Police Sgt. Mike Cando said officers were still on the scene, though State Police are handling the initial investigation.
