Eight area police departments, Colonie police dog "Vader," students and CAPCOM Credit Union staff celebrated Police Week Wednesday in Colonie with $2,000 in police donations and $50 gift card prizes for children's illustrations about what it means to be a police officer.

 

As well as Colonie police, representatives from Rensselaer County Sheriff's Office, North Greenbush, Bethlehem, Niskayuna, Glens Falls police and the New York State Police Foundation were scheduled.

 

Students came from Roessleville and Saddlewood elementary schools in South Colonie, Latham Ridge Elementary in North Colonie, Glen Worden Elementary in Scotia-Glenville, Harmony Hill Elementary in Cohoes, School 14 and Oakwood Christian School in Troy, Bell Top Elementary in East Greenbush, Hamagrael Elementary in Bethlehem, Karigon Elementary in Shenendehowa.

 

National Police Week began in 1962, when President John F. Kennedy signed a proclamation which designated May 15 as Peace Officers Memorial Day and the week as Police Week. Police officers from around the world converged on Washington, D.C. this week to participate in planned events to honor officers killed in the line of duty.
